New Delhi, India – In a groundbreaking revelation, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has offered the nation its first celestial glimpse of the iconic Ram Temple in Ayodhya. This ‘darshan’ from space, captured by our indigenous satellites, provides a unique perspective on the 2.7-acre temple site, with an enlarged view courtesy of the Indian Remote Sensing series of satellites.

The satellite images, taken on December 16 last year, showcase the under-construction temple amidst the historical tapestry of Ayodhya. However, dense fog since then has veiled the majestic structure, adding an air of mystery and anticipation to the grand consecration ceremony scheduled soon.

Celestial Insights: Dashrath Mahal and Sarayu River

As the lens of ISRO’s satellites pierces through the atmospheric veil, the images unveil not just the temple but also the surrounding landscape. Dashrath Mahal and the serene Sarayu River stand out prominently, reflecting the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. Additionally, the recently revamped Ayodhya railway station is visible, a testament to the evolving infrastructure around the sacred site.

Technological Marvels Facilitating Construction

India’s space capabilities, embodied by ISRO, have played a pivotal role in various stages of the temple’s construction. One of the significant challenges faced was the precise placement of the idol of Lord Ram, measuring only 3 feet by 6 feet, in the spot believed to be his birthplace.

Alok Sharma, International Working President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, shared with NDTV the hurdles faced post the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992. A staggering 40 feet of debris covered the sacred spot, requiring meticulous removal to ensure the idol’s accurate placement. Enter space technology, a game-changer in this three-decade-long project.

Satellite Technology: Navigating History with Precision

To locate the exact spot, construction firm Larsen & Toubro employed cutting-edge technology, specifically the Differential Global Positioning System (GPS). These GPS-based coordinates, precise to 1-3 centimeters, formed the blueprint for placing the idol in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

The technology extended further, integrating signals from India’s ‘swadeshi GPS’ – the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) satellite constellation, a creation of ISRO. S Somanath, ISRO chairman, informed NDTV that five satellites of the NavIC constellation are currently operational, with an imminent system upgrade.
