In a resolute stance following a high-profile state visit to China, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu emphasized his nation’s independence, pushing back against perceived attempts at intimidation. Muizzu, known for his pro-China alignment, addressed the media upon returning from his five-day visit, marking a significant diplomatic move since assuming office in November.

Navigating Diplomatic Tensions

The President’s comments came amidst an ongoing diplomatic row with India, triggered by derogatory social media posts from three Maldivian ministers targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Muizzu, not explicitly naming any country, asserted, “We may be small, but this doesn’t give them the license to bully us.”

Highlighting the vast exclusive economic zone of 900,000 square km that Maldives possesses, Muizzu stated, “This ocean does not belong to a specific country. This (Indian) Ocean also belongs to all countries situated in it,” in what seemed to be a veiled reference to India. “We aren’t in anyone’s backyard. We are an independent and sovereign state,” he affirmed.

Strengthening Ties with China

During his visit to China, President Muizzu engaged in talks with President Xi Jinping, resulting in the signing of 20 agreements between the two nations. A joint statement emphasized mutual support in safeguarding core interests, with China pledging USD 130 million in assistance to Maldives.

Muizzu disclosed that a significant portion of the assistance would be allocated to redeveloping roads in the capital city, Male. This move aligns with ongoing mayoral elections, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development for the nation.

China’s Ambassador to Maldives, Wang Lixin, outlined three key factors contributing to the robust relations between the two nations. These factors included mutual political trust, alignment with President Xi’s initiatives, and a commitment to extensive consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits.

Diplomatic Strain and Economic Collaboration

However, Muizzu’s visit to China was overshadowed by the diplomatic rift with India, fueled by derogatory remarks from his ministers and a controversial report by the EU Election Observation Mission. The report alleged anti-India sentiments and disinformation tactics deployed by the ruling coalition during the 2023 presidential elections, in which Muizzu emerged victorious.

Despite these challenges, China and Maldives inked a USD 50 million agreement to develop an integrated tourism zone in Hulhumale’, along with plans for constructing 30,000 social housing units in Rasmale’. Additionally, China pledged support for a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimale’.

India’s Legacy and Future Collaboration

The significance of India’s influence in Maldives, particularly through the construction of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male, was highlighted. While the hospital was initially built in 1992 by India, recent modifications in 2018 were made with Indian assistance, underscoring the enduring impact of India’s contributions to Maldivian infrastructure.

Amidst the diplomatic intricacies, the two nations also agreed to allow Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, to conduct domestic flight operations in China, further solidifying their bilateral collaboration.

In conclusion, President Muizzu’s visit to China not only reinforced diplomatic ties but also spotlighted the challenges faced in maintaining a delicate balance between global alliances. The Maldives, despite its size, remains steadfast in asserting its sovereignty amidst complex geopolitical dynamics.
